This tour begins with a visit to Bosque de Pomac. Located 22 miles (35 km) north of Chiclayo, Bosque de Pomac is a 740-acre (300-ha) nature reserve. The reserve protects not only a large swath of dry forest but also the ruins of Batán Grande, the first Sicán capital. The Sicán (not to be confused with the Sipán) were an ancient civilization that developed in northern Peru between A.D. 800 and 1300. A Japanese archeologist first excavated the site in 1978, but it wasn’t until 1992 that his team discovered a tomb of an elite member of Sicán society. From this tomb, some 1.2 tonnes of precious metals – mostly jewelry and religious artifacts – were removed. These objects are now stored in the National Sicán Museum.

The tour then continues on to the National Sicán Museum. This modern museum has a wonderful collection of Sicán artifacts, most of them found during excavations of Batán Grande. The museum does a good job modeling various aspects of Sicán culture through the representation of domestic life and manufacturing processes. Other rooms display tombs and funerary objects. The museum also provides details on the excavation and conservation process, as well as information on the chronology, development, economic activities, and burial patterns of the Sicán people.
