Sipán is a Moche site that’s considered to be the most important ceremonial site in northern Peru. The Huaca Rajada, a multilevel royal funeral tomb, is found here. The tomb of the Lord of Sipán, who was buried here more than 1,700 years ago, was found inside the Huaca Rajada in 1987. This tomb was a remarkable find mainly because of all the ornaments and treasures that were buried alongside this Moche royal figure—these provided key insights into Moche culture. The Lord of Sipán was a king who was considered to be a kind of living god. Buried alongside him were a warrior, a priest, three female concubines, a child, dog, llama, guard, and more. His tomb is one of the most important archeological discoveries in Peru.
The Tumbas Reales Museum is well designed and impressive. You’ll tour its exhibits and learn about the social structure and religious beliefs of pre-Inca cultures. Precious stones, necklaces, golden breastplates, and headdresses are on display from the main funerary chamber. The tomb of the Lord of Sipán (which houses his remains) and the tombs of other dignitaries are recreated within this museum. This three-story museum – shaped like a pyramid – is truly world-class.
Finally, your tour group will visit the Bruning Museum. This archeological museum spreads across four floors, holds more than 1,400 items, and has exhibits on cultures like the Lambayeque, Moche, Inca, Chavin, and more. There are gold masks with winged eyes, musical instruments, and a huge assortment of Moche vases. The most important pieces are over 10,000 years old.

The outward appearance of Huaca Rajada is deceptive: these mud mountains (really adobe pyramids) may be less than striking at first glance, but are home to one of the most valuable tombs in Peru’s history. It’s recommended that those exploring this famous catacomb continue with a stop at the Tumbas Reales de Sipán museum in Chiclayo, for a comprehensive overview of this amazing find in the Lambayeque Valley.
